Provincial Charity Newsletter No.14

This is my last Charity E Newsletter before retiring in May 2015. May I take this opportunity to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks for all your support during my tenure as your Provincial Charity Steward. During this time you have certainly helped raise the profile of Charity within the Royal Arch. Examples of this are the magnificent achievement for the 2013 Bicentenary where the Provincial target was doubled, over 100% increase in the number of Chapters operating relief chests and significantly supporting the 2019 Festival Appeal with a total of 22 Bronze, 15 Silver and 4 Gold Chapter Achievement Awards being gained so far. I feel assured that your continued assistance will be shown to E Comp Mark Watkins when he takes over this office at the Annual Convocation.


2019 Festival Appeal


The Festival is over a year old and this was marked by a series of ‘One Year On’ Presentations held back in March 2015. The presentations were a huge success. They included inputs from personal experiences and stories about the lives of people who use the RMBI homes.

The 2019 Festival in aid of the RMBI is all about ‘Committed to Caring’. The RMBI are providing the best possible ‘Care’ for our most vulnerable of Brethren and their families. This includes residential and nursing care, dementia support and respite care. It also provides advice for those who are in difficulty but wish to remain in their own homes.

We are being asked to ‘Commit’ to the Festival. One way to support the Festival is to become a Festival Steward through your Surrey Craft Lodge. If a Companion is not a member of a Surrey Lodge then he can apply through his Surrey Chapter. Festival Stewardship costs a minimum of £150 which can be paid by a monthly regular promise to pay. Over a 4 year period this equates to only £3.13 per month. Vice Patron is £300 (£6.25 per month), Patron £600 (£12.50) and Grand Patron £1,200 (£25). Once qualified as a Steward you can purchase a Festival jewel for £24.

To date over £730,000 has been raised for the Appeal with almost 1,400 Stewardships taken out by Craft and Royal Arch Masons. The Holy Royal Arch Province of Surrey has responded extremely well to this Appeal. So far 66 Chapters have contributed (54%). Chapter Achievement Awards have been introduced as a way of saying well done on the extra effort made via their Chapters. These are awarded on an average per member basis. Bronze £25, Silver £50 and Gold £100. Another way a Chapter can be involved in the Festival is to perhaps donate the proceeds of one raffle/collection per year or organise a fund raising event.

The SNOWDONIA CHALLENGE consists of a group of people from the Festival and PCC Committees together with some of their wives and partners who will climb to the top of Snowdonia.

Surrey for Surrey Cheque Presentations


On 9th Dec 2014 at Croydon the MEGS presented £78,000 worth of cheques to 12 different charities which proved to be a most humbling and in parts very moving event. This was the 10th formal cheque presentation. The S4S scheme has now been running for 5 years. Nearly £700,000 has passed through the scheme and more than 120 Surrey charities have benefitted from these donations. The next presentation is on Thursday 10th December starting at 6.30pm. Venue TBA.

Charity Steward Surgeries


The next 2 joint Royal Arch and Craft Charity Steward Surgeries are to be held on Fri 1st May and Mon 1st June 2015. No need to book, just turn up at Croydon, Surbiton, Sutton, Nutfield, Guildford or Godalming and a Provincial Grand Charity Steward or Charity Liaison Officer will meet you in the bar anytime between 7.30pm to 8.30pm to discuss any charity related matters you have in a very informal way.

The Provincial 500 Club


The membership for the Provincial 500 club is currently being reviewed. It is hoped that the final number of memberships for this highly popular provincial initiative will generate approximately £5,000 per annum net contribution towards the Surrey for Surrey Scheme.

The next draw will be held at the Festive Board following the Annual Convocation on Wednesday 27th May 2015.

There is still time for your Chapter, the members of your Chapter and their immediate families to join, only £15 per number per year, with 2 draws each year, 2 chances to win the first prize of £1000, or one of 4 other prizes, £500, £200, £125 & £50. Charity Relief Chests


46 Chapters now benefit from the scheme. The latest being Brownrigg C1638, Rutlish C4416, Cyclist Filia C6409, Chapter of Mutual Defence C6711 and Surrey Provincial Grand Stewards C8297. If you do not have a relief chest and are interested in increasing your charity donations by 25% by using the gift aid process then please contact me or the Charity Liaison Officer for your Chapter and we will be pleased to assist.


Forces Children’s Trust


The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent has asked Chapters to consider supporting this most worthy of Surrey based charities. FCT is devoted to working together to help children in need whose father of mother has died, or has been seriously injured, whilst serving as a member of the British Armed Forces. If your Chapter would like to make a donation or find out more about the work of the FCT please visit www.forceschildrenstrust.org
