“The Great Debate" was hosted by Septem Chapter No.5887 and took place on 2nd April 2019 at the Surbiton Masonic Hall. A Convocation of Septem Chapter was held before the debate attended by the ME Grand Superintendent and many Companions. The Great Debate at Septum Chapter

33 Brethren & Companions attended to join in the debate; "This house believes that belief in a Supreme Being should not be necessary for membership of the Craft". This was defeated as expected.

The proposers, E Comp Richard Floyd, PAGSoj and E Comp Mik Barnes, PAGSoj put up a spirited argument and in the final poll had swayed some of the Companions with their reasoning.

However, the protagonists, E Comp Rev Len Moreton (Provincial Deputy Grand Chaplain), and E Comp Dave Major, PPGReg fought back and won the day. The Great Debate at Septum Chapter
The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent summed up the debate after the final poll. He congratulated all who had taken part and particularly thanked the debating teams for tackling a contentious subject, and suggested their presentations could lead us to think about what Freemasonry is and what do we mean by "A Supreme Being"? Discussions continued in the bar and at the Festive Board when 28 Brethren & Companions sat down in perfect harmony to enjoy an excellent dinner accompanied by good wines and good company. The sum of £250 was donated to the 2019 Festival, being the proceeds of donations, Alms collection and a raffle.
